A book signing will follow a Q&A.\r\n\r\nThe 2017 novel, Pachinko, was a finalist for the National Book Award and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Richly told and profoundly moving, the bestselling epic features four generations of a poor, proud immigrant family’s fight to control their destinies in Japan -- surviving and thriving against the indifferent arc of history.\r\n\r\nDavid Mitchell, bestselling author of The Bone Clocks, called Pachinko, \"a deep, broad, addictive history of a Korean family in Japan enduring and prospering through the 20th century.\" The New York Times called the novel, \"Stunning... Despite the compelling sweep of time and history, it is the characters and their tumultuous lives that propel the narrative... A compassionate, clear gaze at the chaotic landscape of life itself.\"\r\n\r\nMin Jin Lee is a recipient of fellowships in Fiction from the Guggenheim Foundation (2018), the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study at Harvard (2018-2019), and the New York Foundation for the Arts (2000). She is the author of another novel, Free Food for Millionaires.\r\n\r\nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required but is requested. Sultana Downrigging Festival
Time: Friday (12-9pm), Saturday (9am-9pm), Sunday (10am-9pm)
Location: Chestertown Marina 207 S. Water St. Chestertown, MD 21620
Description: After last year\'s cancellation due to Covid, the Sultana Education Foundation\'s annual Sultana Downrigging Festival returns! Immerse yourself in regional culture, music, family activities, arts, food and more with a selection of North America’s finest Tall Ships and Bluegrass musicians on the waterfront in Chestertown, Maryland, October 29-31. \r\n\r\nSince its inception in 2001, Sultana Downrigging has evolved into one of the largest public sailing events in the United States; each year taking more than 1,000 people out on to the Chester River for a series of “Tall Ship Sails” aboard a fleet of historic ships. This year\'s ships include Delaware\'s KALMAR NYCKEL, Virginia\'s schooner VIRGINIA, Maryland schooners PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II and SULTANA and skipjack SIGSBEE. With fall foliage at its peak and an abundance of seasonal waterfowl entering the region, Sultana Downrigging’s Tall Ship Sails have become a treasured tradition for many sailors. Free Tall Ship deck tours are available each day, ship illuminations will dazzle viewers by night, and on Friday evening visitors can watch an incredible fireworks show over the Downrigging fleet in Chestertown’s historic harbor. The waterfront will also host exhibits of classic and traditional boats with the Antique and Classic Boat Society and the log-canoe SILVER HEEL, and cruises on the local Chester River Packet.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the ships, Sultana Downrigging features a waterfront Music Village, housing regional food vendors, craft beer and bluegrass music. 2021 artists scheduled to appear include 2017 International Bluegrass Music Association (IMBA) award winners, Mile Twelve, 15-time Bluegrass Music Award nominee and three-time IMBA award winners, Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass, 2016\'s WYEP FM\'s top ten bluegrass album award winners, Jakob\'s Ferry Stragglers, the U.S. Navy’s internationally acclaimed bluegrass band Country Current, the 2020 IMBA Momentum Band Award finalist, Colebrook Road, andYamin Williams, a finger-style guitarist who has been featured on NPR, DC\'s WUSA9, and in Rolling Stone, and the Washington Post. Also scheduled to appear are local legends Kentavius Jones, Tom Mindte and Friends, Flatland Drive, Wicked Sycamore, Kid Davis and Company, and The Simmons Family.\r\n\r\nAs if this wasn\'t enough, Sultana Downrigging will also have plenty to offer off the waterfront. Take a walk into unforgettable Historic Downtown Chestertown and enjoy a book talks by U.S. Naval Institute Press Author of the year, Skip Findley: Whaling Captains of Color, and Paul Hendrickson: Hemingway\'s Boat; art galleries and exhibits by local artists and renowned maritime artist, Marc Castelli; interactive presentations on Chesapeake history and ecology, model boats, and family activities at Sultana\'s Holt Education Center; appearances by Maryland DNR’s Scales and Tales; and the two decade running Chestertown Halloween parade. \r\n\r\nAdding a reward to your Downrigging experience, proceeds from the festival will benefit the Sultana Education Foundation’s educational programs for regional school students and the public, and support the nonprofit organizations that operate participating Tall Ships. Sultana is an education nonprofit that provides award-winning experiential learning opportunities to students, teachers and the public in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, working to create future stewards of this national treasure. \r\n\r\nIn 2021 tickets run from between $15 - $45 for single and multi-day tickets with early-bird discount options, and the third day of the event titled “Downrigging Community Day”, will be completely FREE and open to the public. Tickets fro Tall Ship sails run between $35-60.
